About This Game:
Rating: T for Teen. Publisher: Gotham Games. Year: 2002.
This is a beautifully-done video pinball game based
on the first two Austin Powers movies! It's really two pinball
games in one, as there are two different "boards" to play. The
first board is "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery", the
second is "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me". I don't
normally agree with how video games are rated, but feel T for Teen is
appropriate here. There is some mild language and sexual innuendo
within the elements of the game. Things like "Fat Bastard" (in
most Austin Powers merchandise, the name of that character is either
blanked out or totally changed), "Ivana Humpalot", "Alotta Fagina", and
some of the voice clips. It's all pretty mild, though. Real
young kids won't get a lot of it. This is certainly not a
"dangerous" game.
I love the boards! They're so stylish and
colorful! They look like real pinball machine games, only on a
video game screen. The designers of this game really did justice
to the Austin Powers movies. Almost all of the standout
characters are highlighted, as well as most of the funny plot devices.
Both boards are great, and I can't really say that I
like one over the other. I think "The Spy Who Shagged Me" is much
easier to play, and I do better in it. It also has more
interesting characters like Mini-Me, Fat Bastard, and Ivana
Humpalot. But it's a bit too cluttered. "International Man
of Mystery" has a much nicer-looking layout, plus the colors are a bit
more brilliant. And you get to see cool things here like the
Shaguar and the Fembots, that you don't see in "Shagged". It
would have been nice if they could have incorporated all these elements
in one pinball game, but I don't know how they could have done that and
still kept it simple. I'm an Austin Powers fan, and I'm very
happy with the job they've done on this game. You will, too.
But you don't even need to like the Austin Powers
movies to play this game. That's the beauty of it. This is
a game that stands alone. Like or loathe the movies, you must
admit these are beautiful pinball boards. There are different
levels of difficulty, but believe me, "Novice" is hard enough to
master. I certainly wouldn't jump into "Regular", "Novice", or
"Tournament" first time out. Any fan of pinball will find this is
a simple to operate, but challenging pinball game.
History:
The first Austin Powers movie, "Austin Powers: International Man of
Mystery", was released in 1997. The second film, "Austin Powers:
The Spy Who Shagged Me", was released in 1999. This game was
released in September of 2002, after the release of the third movie,
"Austin Powers In Goldmember". I find it odd that the third movie
was not put into this game. It's obvious that this game was
released to help promote that movie.
