Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith
Manufacturer: Jakks Pacific
Year: 2005
About This Set:  The games on this control are based on the movie "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith".  As with any plug & play type game set made during this time, you will NOT see any 3D.  Instead, you get nicely designed games in the 16-bit style (ala early 1990s).  They are five simple little games with simple little functions, but thoroughly challenging to play.  All five games are based on elements from this Star Wars movie episode.

I don't dig Star Wars games as a general rule.  I feel that most of the Star Wars games are made TOO elaborate, and it takes away from the basic fun of the movies.  These games, however, should appeal to even the most casual Star Wars fan.

Game 1: Droid Invasion.  The setup is much like the classic "Space Invaders" video game with one sharp difference.  Obi-Wan does not "shoot" at the enemies.  Rather, he must deflect their lasers with his light sabre.  PLAYING THE GAME:  Obi-Wan is a one-man army against the oncoming droids.  Armed only with his light sabre, he must deflect their lasers towards them.  You get to be young Obi-Wan in a great Star Wars battle!  Cool!

Game 2: Coruscant Attack.  The setup is much like the classic arcade game "Bosconian".  For those who may not be familiar with that game, let me explain.  "Bosconian", and this game, are both multi-directional spaceship shooter games.  Obi-Wan's spaceship is set against a starry background, can move in any direction (eight, actually), and flies around blowing up enemy spaceships.  PLAYING THE GAME:  Obi-Wan flies his Jedi Starfighter spaceship in order to wipe the cosmos from enemy spaceships.  Another game where you can pretend to be Obi-Wan, although you can't see him, only his ship.  Still cool, but this game could be put with any set under a different name and no one would know the difference.  Still great for a Star Wars set, though.

Game 3: Grievous Onslaught.  This is a four-direction, scrolling game, with an overhead view.  Games like this have been made many times, although this one is no specific copy of any game.  PLAYING THE GAME:  You are Anakin Skywalker, and you fight your way through a droid army on the flagship of evil General Grievous, using only your light sabre.  Your mission: Get to the bridge and save Chancellor Palpatine.  STAR WARS FANS KNOW that Anakin Skywalker later becomes the evil Darth Vader, and Chancellor Palpatine is later discovered to be the almighty Emperor.

Game 4: Gunship Battle.  This is much like the classic video game "Defender", but with definite Star Wars elements.  It is a shooter game that scrolls left to right/right to left.  PLAYING THE GAME:  You are an anonymous pilot for the good guys.  Fly your gunship around the area, blowing up bad guy spaceships and keeping your soldier buddies safe.

Game 5: Utapau Chase.  This game combines functions from the 1982 arcade classic "Bump 'n' Jump", and the 1990 hit "1941: Counter Attack".  Both are vertical scrollers that move from bottom to top.  In "Bump 'n' Jump", the first vertical scrolling game, your car bumps or jumps over other cars to get to the finish line and win.  You have to steer away from obstacles that could really ruin your day.  In "Utapau Chase", however, your jumps are made automatically by the computer when you come to a hole in the ground.  The similarity to "1941: Counter Attack" is the never-ending barrage of gunfire, and your ability to shoot back.  PLAYING THE GAME:  Obi-Wan has tracked down the evil General Grievous to his home planet of Utapau.  Grievous, on his Wheel Bike, is fleeing from Obi-Wan's wrath.  Meanwhile, the heroic Jedi must destroy all enemies that get in the way of his pursuit.  Obi-Wan rides a dinosaur-type creature and shoots lasers at his enemies.  Between your lasers and the dinosaur's tail, you must shoot through and beat back all flunkies until you reach the major boss at the end of each level.  Again, you get to be young Obi-Wan.  Awesome!

MY FINAL THOUGHTS:  This is worth having.  If Star Wars even remotely appeals to you, you will love this.  How fun it is to have five neat little games at your fingertips.  As a really cool feature, the control looks like Darth Vader.  Anyone who enjoys the Darth Vader character will like that.  Unfortunately, Darth Vader is NOT in the game set.  This game set mostly features Obi-Wan as the hero.  Anakin is given one game, and one game is anonymous.  It's faithful to the movie because Obi-Wan was the primary hero there, too.
