Power Joy 2
Manufacturer:
Year:
About This Set: There are 10 games actually
built into the Power
Joy controller, and 84 games on the cartridge you can slide into the
controller. A total of 94 video games! Cool! And
these aren't the scrub games like you normally get with plug-and-play
controllers. These are all video games of
1980s-early 1990s arcade/NES quality. In fact, there are
quite a few Nintendo NES/Sega Master/Sega Genesis clones
here. I'm very happy, not only with the quality and
quantity of games here, but with the design of the control. I
have big hands, so it's not always so easy for me to operate video game
controls. But my big hands can work this control quite well, and
it fits comfortably. The controller is very smooth and
rounded. And it looks sleek!
The main Power Joy 2 controller is a game pad with
built-in gun device. Two-in-one controller! Remember how
annoying it always was to hook up the Nintendo Light Gun
seperately? This is a very clever and
workable idea. For two players, there is another controller not
exactly like the Power Joy, but resembling more of a NES type
controller; there is no built-in gun. You have to connect it to
the butt of the Power Joy main controller to be able to work it.
This controller can be operated with an AC adaptor
or 4 AAA batteries. I like it that they give you this
choice. If the adaptor goes bad or you run out of AAA batteries,
you always have the other to fall back on.
Built-In Games:
1. Shoot Copter 1
2. Falling Block
3. Shoot Copter 2
4. Panzer Fly Car
5. Debar Bomb 1
6. Shooting
7. Debar Bomb 2
8. Future Tank
9. Space War
10. Shoot Glass
Cartridge Games:
1. 80 Days
2. 1942
The airplane fighter games from the 1980s-1990s are
the best, because you can just fly around with an overhead view and
blow up stuff. This is a WWII fighter pilot game with a lot of
color and activity. The graphics are decent enough, too, where
you can really imagine you're flying and shooting down WWII-era
planes. Fun!
3. Arkanoid
Did someone say "Breakout clone"? This is
basically a ripoff of Breakout and Super Breakout like you would play
on Atari systems in the 1980s. It is, in fact, a bit better
looking and better done than its Atari inspiration, but its premise is
too simple and I get bored. It's slightly more interesting than
Pong.
4. Aladdin III
This was the first game I actually tried to play on
this device and I love it. It's bright, colorful, and simple, but
with enough activity and challenge to make it interesting. The
Arabian Nights type music is also fun. You're Aladdin, flying
around on a magic carpet, trying to shoot/avoid enemies until you get
to the main boss of each stage. You can get points, power-ups,
extra lives, etc. There isn't even an index screen to this
game. As soon as you press "Start" you're in it. Not a very
complicated game design or concept, but more challenging than you'd
think and surprisingly fun!
5. Argus
6. Adisland
This is the Japanese version of "Adventure Island"
originally produced for the Nintendo NES in 1989. It's exactly
the same as Adventure Island, only the title screen and other things
are in Japanese text. I love Adventure Island, so naturally I
love this game as well. The only bad thing is that, on this
controller, it's hard to control the guy. Too many functions are
spread out with too many buttons. It's hard to get use to
controlling him with this controller. It's a bit more reasonable
to play on NES controls. The game itself is similar to the Super
Mario Bros. series with a likable little adventurer that goes around
collecting items and clobbering bad guys along the way.
7. Ascii
8. Arabian
I think it's funny that they actually had two
Arab-themed games on this cartridge. Unlike Aladdin, you don't
scroll from left to right, but rather stay in the same screen.
You, the Arab, has to run around the ship collecting bags of gold
fighting off animals. Simple to play, but hard.
9. Badminton
10. Baltron
11. B-Wings
12. Bird Week
13. Boat Race
14. Boom Man
I suppose this is an okay game, but the navigation
sucks. You try moving your guy in a certain direction, but most
of the time he will not go, getting stuck in place. By the time
you fiddle around trying to get unstuck, the bad guys get you.
Then you can only set one bomb off at a time, and you have to work
against a timer. It's also not overly-thrilling graphics-wise,
but not bad, either. Worth a few good plays.
15. Brush Roller
16. Clay Shoot
17. Chack and Pop
18. Circus Chablie
19. City Connection
20. Challenger
21. Dig Dug
This is EXACTLY like the classic arcade version of
Dig Dug we all know and love, and the charʡxN
