Darkwing Duck: Publisher: Capcom.
Year: 1992. Difficulty: Medium. Graphics: High.
This
game is very advanced for the Nintendo
NES as far as presentation. The title screens are very
elaborate. They spared no effort or expense in making this an
extremely well-drawn and inviting video game. The characters look
just like they do in the cartoon and the backgrounds are SO
detailed. The bad guys are pretty easy to eliminate and typically
take only one or a few shots. The main bosses are a little tricky
to eliminate and will take many shots. Once you figure out a
system of attack, though, they are pretty simple to beat. The
hardest thing about this game is the jumps you'll have to make.
This WILL get on your nerves as they tend to take you all the way back
to the beginning of the level once you fall down.
Defender II:
Publisher: Hal America. Year: 1988.
Difficulty: Medium. Graphics: High.
It's
the same "Defender" we all know and
love, it was just called "Defender II" for the NES. This is a
much better designed version of the game than most of the Defender
clones out there. The graphics are very clean and easy to
see! This game is easy to play, but hard to win. It's easy
to operate your ship and shoot and fly, but a little tricky to kill all
the aliens without losing a ship or two (or three or four). I
love the whole setup of the game. Defender was one of the
earliest video games originally produced in the 1980s so it can't
compare with newer games like Super Mario Bros. or Legend of Zelda, but
if you want something simple to look at and simple to do, but still a
lot of fun, "Defender II" is your game.
Dick Tracy: Publisher: Bandai.
Year: 1990. Difficulty: Hard. Graphics: Good.
I love this video game!
It's one of the
first NES games I ever owned and still one of my favorites. This
isn't just a shoot-em-up action game. You have to find clues in
order to collect evidence against Dick Tracy's famous enemies in five
thrilling cases. After each case you get a password for the next
case. Write these down, so you don't have to play the whole game
over each time. There's plenty of action, too. When driving
through the city in your squad car, you have to watch out for snipers
on roof tops. Kill these snipers as soon as you can. Get
out of your car and shoot them first. You can also use the squad
car as a shield against the snipers' bullets. When you find the
building you want to enter, you're in for classic arcade style
action! Punch out the bad guys who don't have guns, shoot the
ones who do. If you shoot a bad guy who doesn't have a gun, you
get some of your life taken away. Make sure you grab the clue
when you find it and of course the criminal you're looking for to
interrogate.
The graphics are fine, but not
perfect during gameplay. You can still clearly make out the
images of what's a guy, what's a window, what's a table, what's a
bookshelf, etc. The graphics in the lead-ins before the case are
actually quite outstanding, but you don't see these very often.
They show lifelike illustrations of Dick Tracy, Big Boy Caprice, and
Breathless Mahoney talking. This is a game any young kid or old
adult can play. It has some shooting and punching action, but
there is nothing gory or outlandish that would make this inappropriate
for any age. This is an intelligent video game.
