About This Game
History

About This Game:  Rating: Pre-Rating Era (E for Everyone).  Publisher: Nintendo.  Year: 1989.

Not much unlike the original Super Mario Bros. game for classic Nintendo NES.  What I don't like about this game is that the characters are all so small.  The designers should have thought that out a bit better.  When you're playing a Mario game on TV you can get away with it.  But when you're playing on such a tiny screen, you don't need such big backgrounds.  It's hard to see what you're doing here, no matter how good of eyesight you have.  Other than that, if you like the way Super Mario plays and looks in other systems, you should love this game.

History:  This game marks a lot of firsts.  It was debuted along with the Nintendo Game Boy itself in 1989.  It was the first game for the Nintendo Game Boy.  It was also the first Mario game for the Game Boy.  This was also the first game of the Mario series produced by Gunpei Yokei, who invented the Game Boy and also produced the long-running Metroid series.  Yokei was a great innovator in Mario's games, always exploring new frontiers with different types of games (like "Dr. Mario", the puzzle game) and adding important characters like rival Wario.  If it wasn't for Yokei's untimely 1997 death (car accident) who knows where he would have taken Mario.

"Super Mario Land" was generally well-received by everyone and sold an impressive 14.4 million copies.  It inspired two sequels, "Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins" and "Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3".  SML2 was the first game to feature Wario, who was expressly a villain in that game.  SML3 spotlights Wario almost exclusively, and has little to do with Mario.  Although the character is still a somewhat nasty character, he was toned down from his first appearance.  In later games, Wario has become more of a "bad boy" type of hero than a straight-ahead villain.

"Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3" spawned seven sequels with Wario and was a big success in expanding the Mario line of games.
