About This Show
Merchandise

Power Rangers (1993-?)-  I'm not a fan of the show at all, but it does boast an interesting history.  I think the Power Rangers does better in toys and other merchandising than it does as a TV show.  Some of the product ideas are very clever.

The series we know as Power Rangers was actually a reworked, Americanized version of a Japanese TV series, "Super Sentai", that goes as far back as 1975!  "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" used action footage from the previous season of "Super Sentai", and simply filmed a few new scenes per episode to show American actors in the Power Rangers costumes.  In the American version, there were two girls in the original team, Pink and Yellow.  Many people wondered why Pink wore a skirt, and Yellow did not.  This is for the fact that in "Super Sentai", the Yellow Ranger was male.

The tradition of using a previous season's worth of footage and basic story ideas from "Super Sentai" in a season of "Power Rangers" has continued to the time of this writing (2009).  Actors can be easily changed for the fact that all Power Rangers, when in costume, are completely covered and masked.  This was a very smart idea in the way of marketing a foreign show for international audiences.  Like it or loathe it, "Super Sentai"/"Power Rangers" is easily the most successful example of this kind of arrangement.  Below is a listing of the "Power Rangers" series' in America.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993-1996 TV Series)

* Most sources do not consider this its own series.  Although still a part of the "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" umbrella, this mini-series was aired, in March of 1996, to bridge the gap between "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" and "Power Rangers Zeo".  "Zeo" brought in significant costume and cast changes for the Power Rangers, and this trend has continued for every year since.
