The general idea of this card series is cool but frankly, I think they
did better with the next series (1994). There are 179 base cards
in this series. 135 of these cards are smaller portions of larger
9-card pictures. That's cool. The only downside is that you sometimes need one or
more other cards around it to figure out what's going on in just one
card's picture. Not all of the cards are great, stand-alone
pictures. Plus, having all the trading card information "junk" on
the front of every card kind of spoils the whole, nine-card picture.
9 cards in this set were "Unsolved Mysteries" cards that told about mysteries of the Marvel Universe. Most of the remaining cards were "Famous Battles" that chronicled famous, Marvel Comics fights. Last, but not least, was a 9-card red foil chase set of Marvel 2099 characters. A super special, and quite rare, bonus card could also be found in this series. It is a hologram of Spider-Man vs. Venom. There was only 1 in every 180 packs (or 1 in every 5 boxes). This hologram card came in three color variants: blue, green, or red. The blue is the absolute, most extremely rare version of this card to find, which is already pretty rare to begin with.
This was quite a set for Marvel! They used every sort of gimmick in the book and it made for a really special trading card series. Some of the artwork looks a little rushed, but I really have no big complaints. Trading cards are supposed to have all kinds of neat, attention-getting, gimmicky ploys. This series really delivers.
