What is Squirt?

Squirt is a caffeine-free, citrus-flavored, carbonated soft drink.  It is naturally flavored, but contains less than 1% grapefruit.

History

  • "Squirt" was created in 1938 by Herb Bishop, upon experimenting with another soda called "Citrus Club".
  • The soda was named "Squirt" because it "squirts" into one's mouth like a freshly squeezed grapefruit.
  • In 1941, the mascot character of "Little Squirt" was created.  The campaign was very successful.  Today, however, "Little Squirt" is almost completely forgotten.
  • In the 1950s, Squirt became established as a mixer (like 7-UP had become).
  • In 1983, Squirt got its own diet spinoff pop, called "Diet Squirt".  This became the first soft drink in the United States to be sweetened with aspartame (later widely known as Nutrasweet).
  • Sometime in the 1990s "Diet Squirt Plus" was briefly marketed.  This version of the diet pop was Vitamin C-enriched.
  • In the 2000s decade came the spinoff pops of "Ruby Red Squirt" and "Diet Ruby Red Squirt".
  • In 2008, "Squirt Citrus Power" was introduced.  This was like an energy drink.  Unlike regular "Squirt", this pop was caffeinated.  In addition, it contained NO grapefruit juice.  It did have, however, tangerine and other ingredients similar to that of an energy drink.  This pop is really very little like "Squirt" except for the name attachment.
