Daisy
- A daisy is a mix of two flowers: a white ray
floret and a disk floret.
- The daisy used to be called "day's eye",
referring to the sun. Like an eye, the flower opened and closed
with the sunrise and sunset.
- Daisy is a popular name for girls in Spain.

Onion
- A sliced onion can help relieve a bee sting.
Peanut
- A peanut is neither a pea or a nut. It is a
legume. Many legumes are beans.
Pumpkin
- A pumpkin is really a squash!
- A pumpkin's flower is edible.
- Pumpkins are 90% water.
- Jack O'Lanterns used to be carved from turnips
when the tradition started in ancient Europe, but when the tradition
was brought to America in the middle 1800s, pumpkins were more easily
available than turnips, and much easier to carve.
Redwood Tree
- Redwood trees can grow to heights of 350
feet! Their bark can be over a foot thick! Despite this,
they spring from a seed that is only a sixteenth of an inch long.
Talk about your growth spurts!
Strawberry
- A strawberry has, on average, 200 seeds.
- Some superstitious people in Bavaria STILL tie a
basket of strawberries on the horns of their cattle. It's
believed that elves love strawberries, and will bless the cow with an
abundance of milk in return.
- Botanists don't consider the strawberry to be a
true berry, because real berries carry their seeds on the inside.
Strawberries are the only "berries" to have seeds on the outside.
