Live in Africa (1998, Pioneer
Artists)- RECOMMENDED! 40 minutes. This
concert has been released by different companies under a number of
titles, but this is a pretty good quality release. This is the
1974 concert in Kinshasa, Zaire. It was part of a three-day music
festival celebrating the legendary boxing match taking place between
George Foreman and Muhammed Ali. Although a short concert, the
Pointers could not have packed more songs or energy into this
show. It's incredible! The concert starts off with an
overly long introduction with African dancers, but once it gets into
it, it doesn't let up! The live version of "Wang Dang Doodle"
(called "All Night Long" on this release) is awesome, but so
short! I was hoping for at least a seven-minute version like you
hear on their excellent debut album. The entire concert is
outstanding, but the Pointers really hit their stride with a stellar
live performance of "Yes We Can Can" and the tour-de-force finale,
"Love Up In Them Hills". This DVD is a must-have for anyone who
loves the 1970s-era of Pointer Sisters. This was directed by
Academy Award winner Leon Gast.
