About These FilmsTalk about a remake that far surpasses the original!  I never cared for the original film of "The Mummy" (1932) starring Boris Karloff as the monster, or any of its sequels and knockoffs.  Before 1999, ALL the Mummy movies were just schlocky horror flicks.  The 1999 film of "The Mummy" is a whole different recipe!  There are some elements of horror, of course, but this series of movies is actually more of the "action-adventure" genre.  I call these movies "adventure movies" because they're more than just action flicks; they're about discovery.  To me, that's the difference between action movies and adventure movies.  An action movie is just about fighting.  "The Mummy" series, with Brendan Fraser, is a bit more elaborate.

The first movie in this series is an extremely loose remake of the 1932 classic.  About the only thing the same is the fact that the mummy's name is Imhotep (played by Arnold Vosloo).  However, Arnold Vosloo is not the central character, nor does he get top billing.  Vosloo's Imhotep is definitely the major villain of the first two films, but the main character is adventurer Rick O'Connell (played by Brendan Fraser).

After the second film it would have been impossible, almost ridiculous, to bring back Imhotep for another movie.  The series went on hiatus for several years, and came back strong with another mummy villain, Emperor Han (played by Jet Li).  This was a refreshing move because it gave us a type of mummy we've never seen before (Chinese) and took us to all kinds of places untypical of what we'd expect to see in a mummy movie.  The third film, "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" (2008), was very fresh and original and, fortunately, was another success for the franchise.  It looks like the trend for all future movies of this series will be to find mummy villains from different areas of the world.

An interesting thing that this film series has done, that no previous "Mummy" film series ever came close to doing, was branch out into spin-off movie series ("The Scorpion King") and animated specials.
