Men
O' War (1929): From the
beginning sequence where you see Laurel & Hardy in Navy outfits,
you know right away that this is going to be one of their best.
That's just funny as all get out! And luckily, this just happens
to have some of their best dialogue and comic routines. It
doesn't try to weave a fancy plot in a 20-some minute program. It
doesn't have to. Laurel & Hardy are U.S. Navy men on shore
leave. They meet up with two bubble-headed girls and the
silliness goes on until the end.
Anne Cornwall is an absolute delight. She
plays the brunette
girl. You'll notice that in this short, the girls do not have
names. One is blonde and one is brunette. Cornwall's
character gets most of the screen time between the two. Her
facial expressions and line delivery is really something else!
Priceless.
James Finlayson, the most famous of L&H
regulars, appears as the
Soda Jerk. He's always funny, and he never has to act
differently. Just doing what he does makes it fun to see him from
one L&H movie to another.
Charlie Hall is perfect once again as the short,
irritable guy you want
to smack the stuffing out of to look at him. He plays the angry
little boater of whom gets on Laurel & Hardy's bad side.
I highly recommend the colorized version, because it
brings the locale
and girls to such colorful and charming realism. If you can find
it, watch it. But, as always, black and white is fine, too.
