The Chimp
(1932): This is everything you could want to see in a
Laurel & Hardy short. The premise itself is
interesting. It starts out with Laurel & Hardy as circus
entertainers. After the circus folds, they inherit Ethel the
chimp. Hardy's plan is to sell Ethel to the zoo the next day, but
it seems as if the next day can't come fast enough! The motel
they stay at has an incredibly irate owner. He angrily storms
about waiting for his wife to come home, who has been staying out too
long. The wife's name is Ethel, too. You can just imagine
the things that develop with that plot device! Ethel the chimp is
difficult for Laurel & Hardy to keep under wraps as she's always
doing something to get them in trouble. This is one of their very
best shorts and I recommend you get the colorized version so you can
see the circus, both Ethels, and everything in the brilliant color it
deserves! But, like I always say, don't pass up the
black-and-white version if it's the only one handy!
Martha Sleeper plays Ethel the wife. First of
all, she's hot! Very pretty. Secondly, I just like her
name. "Martha Sleeper" sounds cool. She doesn't have any
lines of dialogue, but she does stand out in her appearance at the
end. Plus she looks lovely in the photo that Billy Gilbert (the
landlord) keeps staring at. Other than that she's a mystery
woman. I'd like to know more about her. If you know
anything, please CONTACT ME.
Another lady I'd like to know more about is Belle
Hare, the actress who plays Lady Godiva at the circus and you see her
again, out of costume, in the scene where the circus folds. I
like her name and I know she was in a few other movies, but after that
it seems she disappeared from the Hollywood scene. CONTACT ME
if you know anything.
