Godzilla Easy Facts:  There are two "eras" of Godzilla films.  The first is called Showa.  The second is called Hessei.

Showa Era of Godzilla (1954-1975)
Hessei Era of Godzilla (1984-2004)

The Showa Era of Godzilla started the mighty monster as a villain in its early films, beginning with "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" (1954) and ending with "Godzilla vs. Mothra" (1964).

For the remainder of the Showa Era, the "original" era of Godzilla films, Godzilla was presented as a hero protecting the Earth from evil monsters.  This began with "Ghidrah, the Three-Headed Monster" (1964) and ended with "Terror of Mechagodzilla" (1975).

There was a nine-year break from Godzilla films.  It is said by some that Toho Productions was not happy with their "hero" Godzilla.  In any case, Godzilla was reborn in 1984 with "Godzilla 1985".  Beginning with this movie and continuing to the most recent, Godzilla is an evil monster again.  Will he ever again be shown as a hero?  Only time will tell.  The "hero" Godzilla has just about as much of a loyal following as the "evil" Godzilla so anything's possible.

The last Japanese-made Godzilla film was made in 2004.  This and the previous two films had not done as well as hoped at the box office.  Because of this, Toho Productions has said that they will not make another Godzilla film for at least a decade until the interest comes back for the creature.

The first movie where Godzilla fights another monster.

3. King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962)
Actually made as a comedy more than a serious Godzilla film.

This film returned Godzilla movies to their serious, albeit still campy, roots.

Godzilla (1998)
This is not an official Toho Productions film, but a completely American Godzilla movie.  It wasn't a huge crowd-pleaser (although it wasn't a terrible film, just flawed).  Toho, however, slams it to this day.  As a matter of fact, they modeled a villain after this Godzilla design that they called "Zilla" and had their own Godzilla fight him in the 2004 film.

23. Godzilla 2000 (1999)

This is the first Godzilla movie from Toho where he is fully computer generated (CGI).  It is also the first Godzilla movie where he is green.

24. Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000)
25. Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack (2001)
26. Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (2002)
27. Godzilla, Mothra, Mechagodzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003)
28. Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)
