Out
of the 28 Blondie films made, the character of Mary Reynolds, the
Switchboard Operator appeared in 20 of them. For the most part,
Mary did not have a big part in the Blondie films. She simply
observed Dagwood's misadventures at the Dithers Construction
firm. What made her interesting, though, was that she was the
"straight man" between the craziness of Dagwood Bumstead and his cranky
boss J. C. Dithers. There were three actresses who played Mary
throughout the series. Mary Jane Carey was the first "Mary",
playing her a total of 7 times. Ann Loos became the next "Mary",
but only in one film. The "Mary" we usually see was played by
Alyn Lockwood for a total of 12 times. Here
is a breakdown of the Mary Reynolds character taken in order of film
