Oxydol "Pogo" Plastic Mugs (1969)
Oxydol "Pogo" Plastic
Mugs (1969)
There were 6 plastic mugs in this series: Albert
Alligator, Beauregard Hound, Churchy LaFemme, Howland Owl, Pogo Possum,
Porky Pine.
In 1969, Procter & Gamble released this series of "Pogo" plastic
mugs to coincide with the series of "Pogo" vinyl figures, packaged with
their various soap products, including Oxydol. The figures and
mugs featured the same characters. The plastic mugs were
particularly well-made, with brightly painted character illustrations
on bright color mugs. These mugs had to get a lot of use before
they started to show wear.
An interesting thing about the Oxydol figures: Walt Kelly
(creator of "Pogo") hated the original sculpts of the figures so much
that he designed the ones that saw release. The figures are
actually pretty good likenesses to the characters.
