This comic series
was based on Hasbro's popular toyline and cartoon series of
"Transformers", now referred to as "Generation 1" of Transformers,
since there have been so many incarnations since the 1980s. The
comic books pretty much did their own thing. They didn't really
follow the cartoons or toys. It kind of created its own
"universe", or continuity of events.
To tell the truth, I've never dug Transformers too much. I wasn't that into the toys and I never liked the cartoon. The first live-action movie is okay, but not as cool as it should have been. But I'll be darned if some of the comic issues aren't really interesting. Because this comes from 1980s Marvel, you know that you're going to get great artwork. You'll also get fun, fresh writing. I am really impressed with some of the concepts that came from this comic book series. I recommend this to casual Transformers fans, like myself, and hardcore Transformers fans. If you want to read a comic series that really does the Transformers justice, this is it!
The premise is simple. A civilization of robots that can transform themselves into vehicles comes to Earth. The good robots are called Autobots, the bad robots are called Decepticons. Autobots want to protect humans and destroy the Decepticons. Decepticons want to kill anything that moves. This first comic book series of "Transformers" ran for 80 issues from 1984 to 1991. What's interesting about this series is that it was originally intended to be just a four-issue limited series! It expanded into a regular series, something that rarely, if ever, happens in comics. The final issue read on the cover, "80 in a four-issue series".

1987.
THE COVER IS AWESOME!!! That alone should merit a
look through the pages. This issue reminds me of a Godzilla
episode, where two great giants beat the stuff out of each other using
their environment. In this case, the bad giant robot, Bruticus,
goes toe-to-toe with good giant robot, Defensor. In the middle of
all this is a group of young children who are all really entertaining
characters. To protect them from the dangers of the great fight
is good robot, Blaster. Bruticus is defeated, of course, and the
heroic kids are treated to a ride in a Transformers spaceship!
But the fun isn't about to last, as kids and Autobots (the good robots)
learn that they're being followed by the enemy. To be continued!
#36: January, 1988. So the kids are in space now. Can't even go for a ride on a spaceship without being bothered! The good guy Autobots are momentarily being led by the quite mad Grimlock. Blaster manages to escape the spaceship, but the kids are caught by Grimlock and the Autobots. To survive in space, the kids are now given spacesuits. But Blaster knows that he must save the kids from wicked Grimlock, so he enlists the help of the famous Autobot spaceship Sky Lynx. By the end of the story, however, Blaster turns himself in to save Sky Lynx and the kids. To be continued!
