About This
Series:
This was a good
idea for a series. The whole thrust of it is reprints from Black
Cat's WWII adventures. It was the first phase of the character,
and a defining one at that. Lorne-Harvey really gave Black Cat
fans what they wanted here. This WAS meant to be an ongoing
series, but it lasted for only one issue. What held this series
back from being more successful? It certainly wasn't the
fans. People love the Black Cat. I think the fact that it
came from an independent publisher and didn't get the exposure it
deserved was the major reason, as I believe it was for all of
Lorne-Harvey's titles. A second reason would be the fact that it
was all black and white. People like color with their
comics. I put up with black and white because I love the
material, but I prefer color. Most readers are much harsher than
I, and absolutely won't give black and white comics the time of
day. One suggestion I have, on the series itself, is that it
should have reprinted all of Black Cat's WWII adventures in
chronological order. Issue #1 should have featured Black Cat's
first story from 1941 and continued from there. Everyone loves
continuity, and they like the artwork from story to story to be
somewhat consistent. This is a mistake made in the "Original
Black Cat" series as well. But I do love the quality of the
reprints, albeit black and white, and the awesome color covers of all
the Lorne-Harvey titles!
I also like the fact that other WWII Harvey heroes
like Pat Parker: War Nurse and Shock Gibson are presented as back-up
features. I usually don't think unrelated back-up features are
appropriate for a title. This is an exception. It's great
to see reprints of these other WWII superheroes. It also opens up
possibilities of new stories, set in WWII, teaming up these heroes.
Like all Lorne-Harvey titles, this series deserved a
much longer life.
