About This
Series:
This
was a rather bizarre thing for DC to do. Confusing, for
sure. This is NOT, I repeat, NOT, a Legion of Super-Heroes
title. L.E.G.I.O.N. is a separate superhero team. The
acronym stands for Licensed Extra-Governmental Interstellar Operatives
Network. The whole group is made up of extraterrestrial
superheroes.
L.E.G.I.O.N. first debuted in "Invasion" #1
(December, 1988). They were given their own series in 1989.
Beginning with issue #1, the series was called "L.E.G.I.O.N.
'89". The title changed every year, with the year, until
"L.E.G.I.O.N. '94". It ended with issue #70.
During the Zero Hour story-arc that involved ALL of
DC's superhero titles, the series was immediately morphed into
"R.E.B.E.L.S. '94", beginning with issue #0. The same storyline
was continued that left off with "L.E.G.I.O.N. '94" #70. The new
R.E.B.E.L.S. series lasted until "R.E.B.E.L.S. '96" #17.
By the way, R.E.B.E.L.S. stood for Revolutionary
Elite Brigade to Eradicate L.E.G.I.O.N. Supremacy.
This series focused much more on science-fiction
than the often fantasy-based superhero comics like Superman, Wonder
Woman, etc. Lobo was a team member and ultimately became the
greatest star of the series, spinning off into many of his own
titles. The character of Lobo was like a crazier version of
Marvel's Wolverine. He was an excessively violent bounty hunter
with over-the-top humor and very psychotic. Yet, he was still a
heroic character for the most part. Lobo comics are made more for
laughs than as thought-provoking science-fiction. He certainly
ranks right up there with DC's weirdest, yet most interesting
characters.
Issues:
#63: February,
1994. Lobo fights Superman...again. This is actually quite
funny and action-packed. Superman wins, of course. Oh,
yeah, and the rest of the L.E.G.I.O.N. does something, too. The
highlight is L vs. S.
