About This
Series:
"Kissyfur" was a cartoon series that actually started out as four
half-hour TV specials before having its own regular, Saturday-morning
series. The first TV special, "Bear Roots", was aired in
1985. The regular series debuted on September 13, 1986 for the
1986-1987 season. 16 episodes were produced before the show was
put on hiatus for a year. It came back in the 1988-1989 season
for nine more episodes. The one-shot comic book from DC was
released in 1989.
I absolutely love the cartoon series, "Kissyfur",
and it's pretty fondly remembered by most kids growing up in the
1980s. It's cute and fuzzy and we like it that way.
Kissyfur is an eight-year-old bear cub who relocates to the swamp, with
his father Gus, after a hectic life in the circus. Kissyfur's Mom
had died during their circus days. The place they live at in the
swamp is called Paddlecab County. Gus drives a, you guessed it,
paddlecab, and taxis the residents where they want to go.
The one and only issue was based on the first
special, "Bear Roots", and tells Kissyfur's story. This was
really only meant to be a one-shot comic. I think DC was trying
to test it out for a mini-series, perhaps regular series, but it didn't
take. The cartoon had ended production, and I don't think the
executives at DC were that interested in promoting "Kissyfur" in the
first place. It's actually surprising that DC picked up this
comic, as their tastes have always lended to serious superheroes.
Marvel, in the 1980s, was a more likely source for child-friendly
comics. "Kissyfur" would have definitely had a longer life with
Marvel at that time, as the publisher was not solid superhero until the
middle 1990s.
Issues:
#1: 1989. This
comic was done very well and is so easy to look at and read. A
definite must-have for fans of the cartoon (like me). I wish this
had been intended as a regular series.
