About This
Series:
Hawkman is one of DC's most abused superhero characters!
He's gone through so many incarnations, and none of them has received
any long-standing popularity. The shame of it all is that Hawkman
comics are actually good, fun adventure stories! The name of
Hawkman has been used pretty regular since the character debuted, way
back in 1940, as well as the idea that he's a man in a hawk suit, but
the look of the character, the character itself, and definitely the
continuity has been muddled many times over.
This is the third such series titled "Hawkman",
beginning in 1993 and ending in 1996. It lasted from issue #0
through #33 (a total of 34 issues), and spawned two annuals.
Hawkman's costume in this series looks more militaristic than anything
he's ever had before. It later reverts to the classic, Katar Hol
look (similar to the 1960s-80s).
Issues:
#1: September,
1993. Continuity problems make Hawkman comics of the 1980s-today
hard to follow, but this is a cool issue where Hawkman returns to Earth
and starts taking out bad guys like nobody's business! Green
Lantern Hal Jordan, suspicious of this "new" Hawkman, decides to
investigate things at the end of this issue! Written by John
Ostrander. Art by Jan Duursema.
#5: January,
1994. I'm a smart fellow, but I do find this story hard to take
in unless I'm really concentrating. A lot of body-swapping in
this one. Katar Hol, the previous Hawkman, is now in Hawkwoman's
body. The evil Count Viper is now in Hawkman's body. And
Shayera Thal, Katar's mate and the true Hawkwoman, is now in the body
of the fat, old man Count Viper. The villainous Count Viper, in
disguise of Hawkman, is hypnotically controlling the superheroes Wonder
Woman and Bloodwynd to do his evil bidding. So, Hawkman (in
Hawkwoman form), and Hawkwoman (in Count Viper form), take on Count
Viper (in Hawkman form). Hawkwoman, in Count Viper's flabby old
body, dons a makeshift hawk costume in fighting the fake Hawkman.
Whew! Got that all straight?! Written by John
Ostrander. Art by Steve Lieber.
#6: February,
1994. Everybody finally gets back into their right bodies, thank
goodness! Guest-starring Wonder Woman, Bloodwynd, and
Eradicator. This is John Ostrander's last issue as writer of
"Hawkman", having written Hawkman-related comics for a long, long
time. Hawkman and Hawkwoman are reunited, and I really think he
wanted to stick around long enough to end things on good terms with our
heroes and tie up loose ends. It was a good way to end his tenure
with "Hawkman". Too many writers would leave in the middle of a
storyline. Art by Steve Lieber.
