About This
Series:
Perhaps a better
name for this comic would be "The Shade and Tara Special", or "Tara
With Shade". Tara not only makes a "guest appearance" in this
issue, she is a major part of the comic, if not the major character in
the first story. To make a long story short, Tara and Shade team
up to fight Umbra, an evil voodoo priestess. We learn a bit more
about Tara's background in this story. The Shade, always a cool
character, just "sits in" on this adventure. The second story is
a Shade solo adventure. The third story is a Latigo Kid
reprint. Why a Western comic reprint in a "Shade Special"?
I don't know. It's a good story, but it just doesn't fit this
title. They should have put in another Shade story.
This is another comic series that ran only one
issue. I wish it would have continued. The Shade is such an
intriguing, mysterious hero character. And he was a good match-up
for Tara. Most superhero team-up comics have made the mistake of
pitting our heroes against each other, usually only helping each other
in total reluctance. This comic does not do that. Shade and
Tara work well together from the start, after the initial meeting, of
course. The cover is almost completely unrelated to the first
story. Tara doesn't sacrifice any woman, and the Shade only
attacks her for a few panels when Umbra controls him. It's
quickly resolved and the two heroes are almost always helping each
other.
Issues:
#1: Fall,
1984. In black and white. Rik Levins does the story and art
for the Shade stories. I love his work. He did an excellent
job on the "Dragonfly" series, and he does very well with the Shade and
Tara characters.
