About This
Series:
AC has dabbled in
many genres, but they really seem to stick to superheroes, Westerns,
and sci-fi. The legendary independent comic publisher has
produced many sci-fi comics but, unfortunately, few of them have met
with much commercial success. It would be silly to give each
one-short or short-lived series its own feature, so this feature will
lump them all together.
Issues:
Starmasters #1:
March, 1984. This was the first and only issue of what
was supposed to be a four-issue mini-series. Sadly, this first
issue didn't sell so well and the series was abandoned. I love
it! It was completely in color, which is always a good
thing. This issue, and each issue of the proposed series, had two
feature stories. One was W.O.S.P., created, written and drawn by
Tom Lyle. The other was Breed, created, written and drawn by Paul
Ryan. I like both features, but I got more into Breed. What
makes this amusing is that I bought the issue for W.O.S.P.
W.O.S.P. stands for Women's Outer Space
Patrol. A trio of beautiful women, serving as a special police
force, roam the galaxy to right wrongs. In this story, the girls
track down a rapist.
Breed is very cool. Our hero is a half-human,
half-humanoid alien and Breed became his derogatory nickname, in
reference to "half breed". Breed still goes by this name as an
act of defiance to his enemies. As a child, Breed was taken away
and trained to be a super-killer. At age 18, he turned against
his evil masters and has been exacting revenge ever since. In
this story, Breed has just won a major battle and tries to unwind at a
bar. However, a team of mercenaries just won't let him be.
Their mistake.
