Biography: Jack Rice
was in 12 Blondie movies, 11 of which were as Dagwood's sleazy pal
"Ollie Shaw". There were others who played Ollie Shaw before Rice
and even in-between his tenure, but Rice is THE Ollie Shaw by which all
standards are compared. He's the greasy, scheming, womanizing
jerk that all of us know. What helps is his slicked-back hair,
pencil-thin mustache, thick glasses, and fancy suits. Today, he'd
probably be referred to as a "player". Before his stint in the
Blondie movies, Rice was perhaps most famous for playing the
brother-in-law character in Edgar Kennedy's comedy shorts. Rice
did many, many movies, but very few television spots. Here are

On January 13, 2001 I was contacted by Jack Rice's great-granddaughter Rachel Hsu. Interesting enough, she was trying to find pictures of her great grandfather and asked me for some. They are hard to find and I did give her a few. She told me a little about Jack on January 15, 2001 that I thought was interesting to show here:
"I don't know that much about him. He had divorced my great-grandmother Rose when my grandmother was very young. She didn't see him that often. She lived in Wisconsin and he lived in California. He wrote her a few times and then she went out to visit him once. It was the time when 'Gone With the Wind' was premiering, and they went to see the premiere. I am told that he was a real ladies' man. My great-grandmother was a chorus line girl in New York while they were first married, but the life didn't suit her after my grandmother was born. I am still trying to find more info on my great-grandmother's life in New York. I don't know if she was on-Broadway or off-Broadway. My grandmother doesn't know that much about it, and when my great-grandmother was alive I had not yet found out that was what she had done when she was young. If there is any specific info on my great-grandfather I do happen to have found a little bit about him. Just let me know what you would like to know."
Strangely, I never did hear much from Rachel again. She was supposed to give me more information on Jack Rice, but never did. The most I heard from her is right after I sent the pictures. I do know that she had her own restaurant at the time. I don't know what happened.
I am always looking for more information, rare photos, etc. on anything that involves anyone or anything about the Blondie movies. If you have something concerning Jack Rice that you'd like to share, please contact me.
