Gracie Allen
played by Gracie Allen
"Burns & Allen" TV Series
(1951-1958)
Gracie Allen IS one of the all-time best
female comedians...period. She had such timing and wit. Not
to mention her own personal style which is indescribable in words; you
have to see her to believe her.
On radio, and later in her TV show, Gracie's
on-screen character was SO stupid. Not even the least bit
bright. But anyone watching would have to realize that it takes
someone very smart to play someone that stupid, and many times she goes
at a pace that makes it hard for us to keep up. Sometimes she
says things that you have to think about a bit before it hits
you. Gracie was the brains behind the Burns & Allen act in
real life.
What I like about the Gracie Allen character is that
she's so dumb, but she's always trying to be the most helpful she can
be. She's never doing anything to hurt other people. That
quality has always been extremely rare to the "stupid" characters in
television and film. In the show, those she meets thinks she's
crazy just because they can't believe she's that dumb, but her husband
George knows better.
Always optimistic and ready to be of
service...whether people want it or not. She wins a place in
"Blair's Girls" just for the fact that she has such a good attitude.
