She was 24 and 25 when she starred in the Beverly Hillbillies episodes and LOOKIN' GOOD! Her character in the first two appearances was Mabel Slocum. She was employed by Drysdale's bank president rival John Cushing only to win a banking beauty contest. The gag at the beginning of the first show was that she was dressed plain. Through this trick, Drysdale placed a heavy bet with Cushing that his contestant would win. Then when Mabel strips off her hat, glasses, and trenchcoat she shows off her more-than-ample figure in a tight one-piece swimsuit. Whoa, mama! Jethro, playing spy, overhears Cushing refer to her as 36-23-36 and thinks it's her spy number!
Drysdale sends Jethro to spy on Mabel just to make sure she is a bank employee of Cushing's as the beauty contest rules stipulate. He trails Mabel into Cushing's office where she ends up kissing the information out of him! Elly May is hired by Drysdale and entered into the beauty contest. By the beginning of the second episode with Joyce, we learn that Elly wins the contest. As much as I like Elly May, I'd have to say that in real life Mabel Slocum might have won. She's incredible!
Then in her last show, Joyce played a Kitty Kat Showgirl that Jethro followed around. The Kitty Kat Showgirls were reoccurring characters in the Hillbillies, looking good in their cat costumes! Similar to the Playboy Bunnies!
