Joanna Barnes
played "Cynthia Fenwick"
episodes:
"Elly Starts to School" October 16, 1963
"The Clampett Look" October 23, 1963

Joanna Barnes was born on November 15, 1934 in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.  She is actually quite an accomplished actress and writer, but is perhaps most famous for playing the golddigger Vicki Robinson in the original "Parent Trap" movie from 1961.  Her character of Cynthia Fenwick is an unusual Beverly Hillbillies Beauty for several reasons.

    1.  Unlike most of the Beauties, who deal with Jed or Jethro, this one almost exclusively deals with Elly May.

    2.  She's rich and not a golddigger.

    3.  Has no agenda.  She's not trying to get one up on the Clampetts or anybody for that matter.

    4.  Is a major snob.  Most of the Beauties are polite or feign politeness.

As the two-episode story goes, Elly starts attending finishing school.  Miss Hathaway tricks Cynthia Fenwick and the other snobbish girls that Elly May's hillbilly appearance is a new fashion trend.  Cynthia decides she wants to pal around Elly and drags her mother into it.  Now, one thing I think of when I think of this character is:  "Can her pants get any tighter?"  Yowch!  Those had to be uncomfortable for her to wear, but she wears them well.

Cynthia Fenwick definitely has a higher-than-thou, New England accent which is actually kind of attractive.  I'm usually put off by that way of talking, but her voice comes out as being very proper and superior, but sexy at the same time.  She puts the right amount of purr into her voice.

Besides the Hillbillies and "Parent Trap", Ms. Barnes was in a ton of TV shows and movies.  She even appeared as the golddigger's mother in the 1998 "Parent Trap" remake film!  Not to mention that she was Jane in the 1959 "Tarzan the Ape Man" film.  Acting aside, she was also a distinguished novelist with "The Deceivers" in 1970, "Pastora" in 1980, and "Silverwood" in 1985.  In addition, she was a journalist with a syndicated column called "Touching Home" that appeared in The Chicago Tribune and New York News Syndicate for many years.

As far as I know, she married actor Lawrence Dobkin on June 24, 1962 and stayed married to him until his death on October 28, 2002.  If any of my information is incorrect or if you have something you'd like to add, please CONTACT ME.
