Barbara Nichols
played "Chickadee Laverne"
episodes:
"Jethro's First Love" October 30, 1963
"Chickadee Returns"
November 6, 1963
Barbara Nichols played so many characters in so many
shows, but one of her best-known roles is that of Chickadee
Laverne. Unlike most of the Beverly Hillbillies "Beauties",
Chickadee was neither a secretary or a golddigger. Chickadee
Laverne was a stripper or, as she defines herself, an "exotic
interpretive dancer". In either case, she's an idiot. But
she's a well-meaning bimbo who actually wants to earn her living.
A lovelorn Jethro believes Chickadee is "the one"
when he hears "heart music". The music Jethro hears actually
comes from a small transistor radio hidden in Chickadee's dress.
Misunderstandings further ensue when Chickadee and the Clampett clan
have entirely different ideas of the word "engagement". Chickadee
believes she is being hired for a big show at the Clampett mansion,
while everyone else believes she is marrying Jethro.
Granny is immediately put off by Chickadee due to
her age. The buxom, bimbo blonde is a fair share older than
Jethro. Jane Hathaway despises Chickadee for a number of reasons,
primarily jealousy. Jane ridicules Chickadee for her career
choice, and is mad that Jethro chooses Chickadee. What's more,
Jane is huffy when she believes that Jethro and Chickadee are going to
marry.
Chickadee is finally accepted by Granny and the
Clampetts once Jethro sees her in her undergarments. According to
the "code of the hills", a man must marry a woman when he sees her in
her underwear. Granny ultimately drives Chickadee to distraction
when she is forced to do anything but dance. The bubble-headed
stripper finally figures out that Jethro wants to marry her and walks
out. Jethro loses complete interest in Chickadee once he eats her
"food", which consists of props made of cement and plaster. "It
was all I could do to eat one basket of her viddles," Jethro
says. "If I had to eat her cooking everyday I'd die!"
