About This Animal
IN STORK?: Storks live in Europe and Africa. Europe in the
warmer seasons, Africa in the winter.
most birds, storks like living near people (so do pigeons). They
build their nests high in trees, rooftops, chimneys, church steeples,
etc. They'll usually return to the same place each year...even to
the same nest!
- If a
stork uses an old nest he'll always add more to it like sticks, grass,
rags, etc. An old nest may grow to be as big as a small car!
STORIES: There are many myths that have circulated for hundreds
of years about storks. The most common one is that storks deliver
babies. In Europe this is probably because storks arrive in
spring. Since they like living near people, the myth was probably
started like the similar young baby for the start of the New Year.
story is that storks were once people. This is perhaps due to the
fact that they have such long legs and look so wise.
another stork story is that they turned into humans in winter. In
spring they became birds again.
BIRDS: Storks usually work their tails off (not literally) in
Europe raising young, building nests, and such. In Africa they're
on vacation and don't have to do anything so they eat and eat and eat.
They have a particular fondness for locusts. Storks eat so many
locusts that some people in Africa call the stork "the great locust
