About This
Animal:
- Polar bears are
excellent swimmers.
- Arctic foxes (white foxes)
follow polar bears to find and eat any food they leave behind.
- Small ears are an advantage to polar bears. Why?
Being that they are so small, they lose very little heat. When
you live somewhere as cold as the arctic, it's important to keep as
much heat inside your body as possible.
- Polar bears are the
largest carnivores (meat-eating animals) on the face of the earth.
- Have you ever noticed that
polar bears have a sleek appearance? This gives them a
streamlined shape, perfect for swimming.
- Polar bears do not have eyelashes. Why? Because
they would freeze in an icy storm, making the polar bear cold.
- If you are planning
to eat polar bear meat in the future, be warned! Do not eat the liver
of a polar bear; it is poisonous. The liver contains excessive amounts
of vitamin A which can kill humans.
- A polar bear's eyes are like sunglasses. They protect
the bear from the blinding glare of the bright, white snow.
- The polar bear can
kill most of its prey with a single blow.
- Every toe of a polar bear
has a long, black claw. Claws have many advantages for a polar
bear. For instance, when they decide to come out of the water,
they use their long, sharp claws like steel hooks to grip the ice and
pull themselves out.
- A polar bear is very
comfortable in the Arctic thanks to heavy, long, thick fur and a 4-inch
layer of fat under its skin.
