Before she went into movies, Sylva was a physics student at Naples University. In 1960, she started living with Raimondo Castelli, but did not marry because of the opposition of Italian law and his wife Marinella, refusing divorce to couples married by the Catholic rite. They did marry in Mexico once, but that was not recognized in Italy.
When she became a successful movie starlet in Italy in the early 1960s, she spent most of her money on luxury in a villa set in the well-to-do district of Marino, Rome. She was big into collecting 16th century furniture and paintings. That lasted for quite awhile until her income started dwindling and she had to face a tax evasion inquest. In 1976 she was forced to sell her house.
