Sanford & Son (1972-1977 TV Series):

Melvin-  Played by Slappy White.  Melvin was the first buddy Fred had on the show.  He was then replaced by Bubba Bexley and later Grady Wilson.  Ultimately, Bubba and Grady swapped spots as "best friend" for Fred, but Melvin came before all that.  By no means an attractive fellow, Melvin had the same basic, unassuming mannerisms that Bubba would have, plus he was bigger than Fred.  This started the whole thing of Fred having bigger friends that were not so bright, including Bubba, Leroy, and Skillet.  Melvin was a funny character, and his disappearance from the show, like many of the characters, was never explained.
