Officer
"Smitty" Smith-
Played by
Hal Williams. This was a good character for the show, as was
Swanny and Hoppy. He's one of the cops that drops in on the
Sanfords every once in awhile, always on friendly terms. Swanny
and Hoppy, his partners, were very similar characters and Smitty's
functions remained the same with both of them. First, Smitty has
to translate what his partner says in black talk. Second, he has
to correct his partner when he says something a little off-key (for
instance "hammerhocks and black-eyed rice" and "left on" to name a few).
